Amy did wear the dress again. In fact, after a while, she wore it somewhat regularly for things like going to the movies or going out to eat. Amy would put her brightest smile on twirl as she said, “Vanilla worked too hard for it to stay in a closet.” Even after so many years, however, she never wore it for a date, and she never wore it again on Valentine’s day. That’s why Vanilla felt her eyebrows disappear into her hairline when Amy had called asking, if she wasn’t too busy, could do some alterations on a bit of a time crunch. “You need it back by Valentine’s day?” Vanilla had glanced at the calendar. “I- I don’t see why not.” And that’s how she ended up finding herself at her sewing table in the backroom as the late afternoon sun came streaming in, illuminating the dust in the air and Amy’s wide, watchful eyes. “Do you want me to let out the arms a bit?” Vanilla tugged at the hem of one sleeve. “You’ve gained a lot of muscle. I’d hate to have this cutting into you.”

The orange light of sunset made the apartment of black and white decor glow, and the gold trimmings Rouge had scattered about seemed to burn. It was fashionable, classy, the exact sort of apartment owned by a woman who recommended cash for a Christmas present. Amy briskly walked back down the little gravel path to the parking lot. Above, the moon glowed brightly, and below, the flickering lights of jack-o-lanterns lit her way. She wiped the tears from her eyes, huffing as she did so. This was stupid. She was being stupid. But hearing someone else say it still hurt. Not that her friends had, not directly. Rouge would never be so cruel towards her. Still, she was right. Of course she knew matching Halloween costumes wasn’t fate, and a peach ring in a cake wasn’t a surefire sign, and a hundred thousand apple peels would never tell her who it was she might marry one day. Amy sighed as she peeled another apple from her bag, her small, silver knife glinting in the firelight. Glancing up, she watched as Cream, Charmy, and Tails played tag out on the sands. “They look like they’re having fun.” Amy gasped, hands instinctively clenching around her work. She turned to see Big just a little ways away, his feet outstretched towards the fire while his eyes were on the throngs of people. Silver was excited that they all matched. He had pointed towards Amy before somersaulting, his red and black cape spread wide. She could hear his laughter all the way from the other side of the beach. Had it been any other occasion, maybe Amy wouldn’t have felt the urge to knock him out of the air. As it was, she considered it graceful that she kept her mouth shut as he bombarded her with chatter. Amy tuned him out, drumming her fingers on the bottom of the plate she carried, her other hand maneuvering a fork with surgical precision as she tore apart her tiny little cake. "Remember, you're not going to say anything," Amy pointed a finger at Cream as she handed over the bag Vanilla sent them with. "That was the deal." “What do you think?” Amy gave an experimental twirl, only to stumble as she felt the broad brim of her witch’s hat lift from her head. She grabbed it, and, attempting to save the moment, gave a little jump and ended with a flourish, causing the hat to smash into an arrangement of wooden mixing spoons which clattered across Vanilla’s kitchen countertop. Amy withered a little under Vanilla's patient smile. Cream and Cheese, thankfully, laughed. “You look great!” Cream said as she moved closer to inspect the dress. "It's very you!"
